Overview of the Project
The project is a collaborative effort of the Republic of Kenya and the World Bank

Background
Floods have ravaged most parts of the Western Kenya region for too long, causing great economic loss in terms of livelihoods and assets. Dealing with floods has basically been on response-terms of relief supplies. Construction of dykes has not assisted either, as this has only concentrated in the flood plains; this has aggravated the high levels of poverty in the area. The region has the highest poverty levels in the country, the natural resource base has been deteriorating and this has also increased vulnerability of the local communities to poverty and flood menace.

Target Areas
The project operates in 10 core districts (eight in Western Province and two in Nyanza Province). However, since the Nzoia and Yala catchment cover areas outside this core zone, project resources will be availed for specific catchment management activities in the six non-core districts of Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Keiyo, Marakwet, Trans-Nzoia, and East Pokot.
